A warm smile, the reassurance of an informal safety check for seniors and others experiencing a loss of autonomy. An opportunity to live independently in one’s own homes and community.
Since 1986, the Association des popotes roulantes du Montréal Métropolitain has been coordinating a network entirely volunteer run popotes. The Association promote the development of complementary services through strategic partnerships and collaborations. Our constant efforts to develop new strategies attests to our engagement to work in partnership with our Montreal CLSC’s, hospitals and other health professionals. By converging our expertise and efforts we aim to improve the well-being and quality of life of individuals in the context of a rapidly growing aging population.
The Association des popotes roulantes du Montréal Métropolitain operate a central production center. Every week we prepare and deliver 700 hot meals and an additional 600 frozen meals from our in house selection. We also insure continuity of service when other Popotes close for the summer or experience other constraints.
We proposes high quality low salt, low fat menus that from soup to dessert can be adapted to address special dietary intolerences or allergies.
For those at risk of malnutrion due to swallowing difficulties or other medical conditions, a catering service of Campbell’s Trepuree, a high quality product designed to meet specific nutritional needs is available.
For our more mobile clientele, catered meals are also offered through our community meals services.
All our meals have been approved by a nutritionist and a nutritional chart is available for all meals.
Supported by a dedicated army of volunteers the Association des popotes roulantes prepares and delivers 47000 hot meals and 17000 frozen meals yearly.
While seniors represent the majority of our clientele, we also deliver nutritious, balanced and affordable meals to a variety of groups, including: people with physical disabilities and cognitive impairments, individuals suffering from illnesses and those recovering from surgeries. Our services are also offered as a support to natural caregivers needing a well-deserved break.
The Association des popotes roulantes du Montreal métropolitain is partially funded by the community support program of the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal, a division of the Quebec health and social services department with client fees accounting for 40% of our revenues.
We depend on organizations or individuals, as well as local fundraising activities to make up the rest of the funding necessary to maintain these services and address the growing demand.
Our way of functioning is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when government services, the health and community network and the private sector work hand in hand.
Support is always welcome and needed in ways other than financial donations and volunteering. Goods and services; businesses allowing employees to volunteer during working hours… The possibilities are endless.
* “The evidence is clear. Older adults can live longer, healthier lives by staying socially connected, increasing their levels of physical activity, eating in a healthy way, taking steps to minimize their risks for falls and refraining from smoking. But there are real environmental, systemic and social barriers to adopting these healthy behaviours. Some relate to inequities as a result of gender, culture, ability, income, geography, ageism and living situations. These barriers and inequities need to be and can be addressed now.”
